NASA’s Psyche spacecraft is set to embark on a groundbreaking mission to study a metal-rich asteroid named 16 Psyche. The launch is scheduled for October 12th from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Travelling about 2.2 billion miles, Psyche will venture to the far edge of the main asteroid belt that lies between Mars and Jupiter. The main goal is to gain a better understanding of how the rocky planets in our solar system were formed. Scientists believe that studying this metal asteroid could provide valuable insights into the early collisions that occurred during the solar system’s formation.
Experts theorize that Psyche is the exposed core of a planetesimal that failed to develop into a full-fledged planet due to numerous collisions. By examining Psyche, researchers could unravel the mysteries surrounding these early celestial impacts and perhaps shed light on the iron core of our own planet.
Interestingly, Psyche holds the potential to belong to a category of previously unseen primordial solar system bodies, a fact that further piques the curiosity of scientists.
The mission’s success largely depends on the spacecraft reaching the asteroid and remaining in position for scientific observations. To accomplish this, Psyche will rely on a revolutionary solar electric propulsion system. This innovative technology uses sunlight to generate electric and magnetic fields for propulsion, ultimately keeping the spacecraft in a stationary position.
The route to Psyche includes a gravity-assisted slingshot maneuver around Mars. Assuming all goes as planned, the spacecraft is projected to reach the asteroid in August 2029. Once in orbit, Psyche will gradually decrease its distance from the asteroid, enabling scientists to examine its various characteristics.
To gather valuable data, the mission will employ high-tech instruments such as a magnetometer, multispectral imager, and gamma-ray neutron spectrometer. These tools will be used to investigate the asteroid’s surface, magnetic field, and interior composition.
This ambitious Psyche mission is a collaborative effort between NASA, Arizona State University, Maxar Technologies, and the Launch Services Program at Kennedy Space Center.
