Suspected Serial Killer Targeting Homeless Individuals Apprehended for Separate Killing
Los Angeles, CA – Law enforcement officials have announced a major breakthrough in the case of a suspected serial killer who targeted homeless individuals in Los Angeles. The suspect, identified as 33-year-old Jerrid Joseph Powell, is currently in custody for another separate killing in San Dimas.
Powell was initially arrested for his alleged involvement in a robbery that turned into a homicide in San Dimas. However, investigators soon discovered that he was also responsible for the deaths of three homeless men in separate shootings across Los Angeles.
The victims, who were all asleep in open areas during the early morning hours, were shot and killed by Powell. The murders occurred over a span of four days, taking place in different parts of the city. Investigators were able to locate a handgun in Powell’s car, which was used in the three homeless killings.
The first murder occurred on Sunday, Nov. 26, in the southeast area of Los Angeles. A 37-year-old man was shot in an alley. The following day, on Monday, Nov. 27, a 62-year-old man was shot along a rear wall in the Central division of the city. The third shooting happened on Wednesday, Nov. 29, near an intersection, claiming the life of a 52-year-old man.
In addition to the homeless killings, Powell has also been linked to the fatal shooting of a 42-year-old Los Angeles County employee in San Dimas. Surveillance footage helped investigators determine that Powell followed the victim home and then proceeded to rob and shoot him.
Thanks to surveillance video and automatic license plate reading technology, authorities were able to apprehend Powell when his vehicle of interest entered Beverly Hills. Mayor Karen Bass has praised the effectiveness of these technologies and vowed to continue utilizing them in the fight against crime.
Investigators believe Powell has no connection to the homeless victims and have noted his extensive criminal history, which includes violent offenses. In response to these heinous crimes, the LAPD has created a task force within the Robbery-Homicide division to thoroughly investigate these cases. They are also collaborating with surrounding cities to identify any similar crimes and potential leads.
Mayor Bass has implored homeless individuals to seek shelter and support during this time of heightened concern. In order to provide additional safety, the winter shelter program has been activated. This program aims to offer a safe haven for those on the streets while the search for the suspect continues.
Anyone with information related to these crimes is urged to contact the LAPD tipline at (213) 486-6890. The authorities are counting on the public’s assistance to bring justice to the victims and their families, and to help ensure the safety of the community.
