President Joe Biden announced during his State of the Union speech an emergency military mission to construct a port in the Mediterranean Sea on Gaza’s coast. The port will serve as a crucial hub to deliver humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza, including food, water, medicine, and temporary shelters.
Led by the U.S. military and partner countries, the operation will not require American troops on the ground but will be able to handle hundreds of truckloads of assistance each day. While the planning and execution of the port will take several weeks, initial aid shipments will arrive through Cyprus in the meantime.
Since the conflict in Gaza began on Oct. 7, the U.S. has already provided over $180 million in aid but recognizes the urgent need for more assistance. In addition to the port construction, efforts are underway to establish a third land crossing into Gaza to ensure aid can reach those in need.
On Thursday morning, the U.S. conducted its third air drop of aid into Gaza, delivering nearly 113,000 meals in 192 bundles. Despite these efforts, the U.S. is still advocating for Israel to allow more aid into Gaza by land while exploring all possible channels to provide assistance to the region.
The mission to build the port in Gaza reflects the ongoing commitment of the U.S. to support humanitarian efforts in the region and provide essential aid to those affected by the conflict. This initiative reinforces the U.S.’s dedication to helping those in need and ensuring the delivery of critical supplies to Gaza.
