Former President Donald Trump’s political action committee (PAC), Save America, has reportedly spent a staggering $40 million on legal fees since the beginning of this year. The PAC, which primarily relies on small-dollar donations from Trump’s supporters, is expected to disclose this hefty sum to the Federal Election Commission (FEC) in its upcoming report.
According to FEC records, Save America’s legal expenses for 2022 alone surpassed $16 million. However, their spending in the first half of this year has more than doubled that amount. The Washington Post was the first to uncover the PAC’s significant investment in legal defense.
Trump’s team has justified these astronomical costs, claiming that they are necessary as the former president’s legal troubles continue to escalate. To further aid individuals implicated in investigations related to Trump’s presidency, Save America is establishing a legal defense fund known as the Patriot Legal Defense Fund Inc. This fund will help alleviate the financial burden for both current and former aides and employees involved in ongoing legal proceedings.
The Patriot Legal Defense Fund Inc. will be spearheaded by Trump’s trusted associate and adviser, Michael Glassner. This move comes as Special counsel Jack Smith recently filed new charges against Trump, Walt Nauta (one of his aides), and Carlos De Oliveira, accusing them of mishandling classified documents. Both Nauta and De Oliveira are being represented by attorneys paid for by Trump’s operation.
In addition to these charges, Trump is also confronted with legal allegations regarding business fraud. Furthermore, he remains under investigation for his role in the events of January 6th and claims of voter fraud surrounding the 2020 election. As his legal challenges continue to mount, Trump has expanded his legal team in an effort to navigate through these multiple legal battles.
Save America’s staggering legal expenses highlight the mounting pressure and the complexity of the legal battles facing the former president. Trump’s supporters will likely keep a close eye on the PAC’s financial reports to determine the extent of support being provided to Trump’s allies and the potential impact it may have on his legal outcomes.
