Ukraine launched a new wave of drone attacks on Russia during the final day of a presidential vote to extend President Vladimir Putin’s rule. The Russian Defense Ministry reported downing 35 Ukrainian drones overnight, with some flying dangerously close to Moscow and Russian regions bordering Ukraine.
The attacks targeted various regions, with some drones striking as far as the Yaroslavl region, about 500 miles from the Ukrainian border. Ukrainian drones were also downed over Belgorod, Kursk, Rostov, and Krasnodar regions, focusing on refineries and oil terminals.
Tragically, the violence resulted in casualties, including a 16-year-old girl killed and her father injured in the Ukrainian shelling in the Belgorod region. Additional casualties were reported in a refinery blaze. In response, Russian forces shot down 14 Ukrainian drones over the Odesa region, following a ballistic missile assault on the city.
The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has now entered its third year, with Russian forces facing slow progress and facing counterattacks from Ukraine. Russian military claims to have prevented a cross-border incursion by Ukrainian “sabotage and reconnaissance groups,” capturing 25 Russian soldiers in the process. However, this claim has not been independently verified.
The cross-border attacks highlight the volatile nature of the conflict, with both sides continuing to engage in military actions despite efforts to negotiate a ceasefire. As the situation escalates, the international community closely watches for any potential resolution to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
