Authorities in Vermont are urging residents to be extra cautious after a disturbing trend involving AirTags has come to light. Multiple cases have been reported of people finding the tracking devices on their cars after returning from road trips to Canada.
It is believed that criminals are using AirTags to track the movements of vehicles, with the aim of eventually stealing them. One such case involved Massachusetts resident Ethan Yang, who found an AirTag hidden in the front grill of his car after returning from Montreal.
The Burlington, Vermont police department has seen a significant increase in reports of AirTags being found in cars following trips to Canada. Ryan McLiverty, a cyber analyst with the Vermont Intelligence Center, has warned that criminals are taking advantage of this technology to target individuals for criminal activity.
Despite the alarming nature of these incidents, Apple’s AirTag safety features are working as intended in these cases. The Find My app alerts users to any unrecognized AirTags traveling with them, allowing them to make the device play a sound to locate it. Additionally, the AirTag will emit a sound on its own after a certain amount of time if it becomes separated from its owner.
