Will Smith surprised fans at Coachella on Sunday night by making a special appearance onstage with J Balvin. The Hollywood actor performed the title track of the 1997 film “Men in Black” dressed in his iconic suit and sunglasses.
Balvin’s set at the music festival had a UFO-themed interstellar vibe, with dancers in comically stereotypical alien costumes. The Colombian reggaeton artist opened his performance with a mock-1950s newsreel about an alien invasion, revealing himself as the alien.
Accompanied by a troupe of dancers in alien-like costumes, Balvin wowed the crowd with otherworldly moves on stage. The performance started with a color scheme of whites and greys, eventually transitioning to vibrant interstellar visuals.
Balvin’s set featured fan-favorite hits like “Mi Gente” and incorporated snippets of popular songs such as Usher’s “Yeah!” and Cardi B’s “I Like It”. His performance largely marked the beginning of Latin music’s presence at Coachella in 2019.
The reggaeton artist’s set included guest appearances from Rosalia and Sean Paul, along with tributes to reggaeton legends like N.O.R.E., Daddy Yankee, and Nicky Jam. Balvin also covered songs by Cardi B and Prince Royce, and paid homage to Latin music with giant caricature heads of Cardi B and Bad Bunny on stage.
The singer expressed his pride in hearing Spanish being spoken on Coachella stages, underscoring the increasing influence of Latin music at the festival. Balvin’s performance was a testament to the rising popularity and impact of Latin music in the global music scene.
