Title: Former Kansas Jayhawk Players Find Success in NFL Practice Squads
Subtitle: Opportunities for roster-bubble players increase with expanded practice squads
In the aftermath of the preseason, NFL teams were forced to make some tough decisions regarding their final 53-man rosters. Unfortunately, only one former Kansas Jayhawk player found a spot in the league’s final selections. However, the news is not all bad, as eight other former Jayhawks were able to secure places on practice squads.
Defensive end Dorance Armstrong, who had a notable college career at the University of Kansas, caught the attention of the Dallas Cowboys with his impressive performance during the 2022 season. He managed to secure a spot on their 53-man roster, solidifying his position for the upcoming year.
While some former Jayhawks were not as fortunate in making the cut, they were able to find opportunities on practice squads. Hakeem Adeniji, who previously played for the Cincinnati Bengals, has joined the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad. Meanwhile, undrafted rookie free agent Earl Bostick Jr., who spent training camp with the Cowboys, has also signed with Dallas’ practice squad.
Another player worth mentioning is Kyron Johnson, who was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2022. Despite his previous success in playing 16 games last year, Johnson will continue his journey with the Eagles’ practice squad.
Lonnie Phelps, a talented defensive lineman, showcased his potential during the preseason with the Cleveland Browns. His outstanding performance earned him a place on the Browns’ practice squad.
Unfortunately, not all former Jayhawk players had such a successful preseason. Kwamie Lassiter II, a wide receiver, returned to camp with the Cincinnati Bengals but only managed to make one catch during the preseason. Nevertheless, Lassiter has secured a spot on the Bengals’ practice squad.
Caleb Sampson, a defensive tackle, made a solitary tackle for the Indianapolis Colts during preseason action. Although he did not make the final 53-man roster, Sampson will be joining the Colts’ practice squad for the upcoming season.
Steven Sims Jr., who spent the last four years in the NFL, has returned to his hometown of Houston to join the Texans’ practice squad. This represents a fresh opportunity for Sims to make an impact in the league.
The expansion of NFL practice squads to accommodate 16 players has proven beneficial for former Jayhawk players, providing increased opportunities for roster-bubble players. This year’s preseason has highlighted the talent of former Kansas Jayhawk players, with many securing spots on practice squads across the league.
It is worth noting that former KU running back Khalil Herbert still remains with the Chicago Bears after an impressive 2022 season. Additionally, the only other Jayhawk player in the NFL last season was Chris Harris Jr., who played for the New Orleans Saints.
Meanwhile, Daniel Wise, who filled in for Chris Jones during the preseason with the Kansas City Chiefs, did not secure a spot on the Chiefs’ practice squad this year. However, the potential shown by Wise during his time in the preseason indicates that he may still have opportunities ahead.
As the regular season approaches, the former Kansas Jayhawk players who earned the chance to compete in practice squads will continue to work diligently to prove their worth and potentially earn a place on an active NFL roster.
