Progressive Move Forward Party’s Pita Limjaroenrat Faces Challenges in Becoming Prime Minister
In a surprising turn of events, the Progressive Move Forward party, led by Pita Limjaroenrat, emerged victorious in the May 14 election. However, Pita failed to secure the necessary support from both the lower house and Senate to become the country’s prime minister in his initial bid.
Undeterred by this setback, Pita reaffirmed his nomination for prime minister and stated that the Senate’s blockage could not impede his candidacy. Moreover, he brushed off a complaint filed against him to the Constitutional Court, emphasizing that it should not affect his chances of becoming prime minister.
To further complicate matters, Pita’s liberal agenda, particularly his focus on implementing reforms and changing the law that prohibits insulting the monarchy, has garnered immense support from the nation’s youth. This has sparked controversy and divided public opinion on his bid for leadership.
When the legislature holds another vote on Wednesday, Pita will once again rely on securing enough votes to secure the prime ministerial position. Should he fail for a second time, Pita has announced that he will step aside and let his ally, the Pheu Thai party, take the lead. Pheu Thai, which won the second-largest share of votes in the May election, could become a possible contender if Pita’s aspirations are thwarted.
In the last vote, Pita managed to secure 324 votes, with only 13 senators supporting him. This implies that he will need to gain substantial backing from both the lower house and Senate to achieve his goal.
Some speculate that if Pita fails again, there is a possibility of another candidate, such as real estate magnate Srettha Thavisin, being nominated for the prime ministerial position in the third vote. This uncertainty creates further anticipation and adds to the political intrigue surrounding this issue.
As the country eagerly awaits the outcome of the upcoming vote, Pita Limjaroenrat’s political aspirations hang in the balance. The Bib Theorists will continue to closely follow this developing story and provide updates on the progression of the selection process for Thailand’s next prime minister.
