NASA astronaut Christina Koch and the next four moon astronauts have signed their names on the Orion spacecraft stage adapter for the Artemis 2 moon mission. This significant event took place at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.
The adapter, which will be positioned underneath the astronauts’ Orion spacecraft, will play a crucial role in preventing gases from entering the spacecraft during launch. It is an essential component for ensuring the safety and success of the upcoming mission.
The crew for the Artemis 2 mission includes NASA commander Reid Wiseman, NASA pilot Victor Glover, NASA mission specialist Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen. These highly trained astronauts are currently going through an intensive 18-month training program to prepare for the first human moon mission since Apollo 17.
As part of their training, the crew is not only familiarizing themselves with the Orion spacecraft but also practicing various medical procedures that may be required during the mission. Additionally, they are scheduled to participate in a recovery exercise at sea, in collaboration with NASA and the U.S. Navy.
In another positive update, the Orion spacecraft recently completed its first power-on test at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. This test is a crucial milestone in the spacecraft’s development, ensuring that all systems are functioning properly and ready for the upcoming mission to the moon.
The Artemis 2 mission represents a significant step forward in NASA’s efforts to explore the moon and eventually send astronauts to Mars. With the crew now undergoing intensive training and the spacecraft passing vital tests, excitement is building for the long-awaited return to the lunar realms in late 2024.
