Minnesota State Senator Nicole Mitchell, representing DFL-Woodbury, found herself on the wrong side of the law when she was arrested for suspected first-degree burglary in Detroit Lakes. The incident took place at 4:45 a.m. on Monday when a homeowner on Granger Road reported a burglar inside their residence.
Mitchell, 49, was taken into custody and booked into Becker County Jail following the report. Elected to the Senate in 2022, Mitchell is currently serving her first term and holds the position of vice chair of the Senate State and Local Government and Veterans Committee. Prior to her political career, Mitchell worked as a TV meteorologist for KSTP and Minnesota Public Radio, as well as serving as a commander in the Air National Guard’s 126th Weather Flight.
News of Mitchell’s arrest was initially reported by local station KVRR-TV in Fargo, North Dakota. The Senate DFL Caucus has chosen not to comment on the situation, citing the need for more information. However, a source within the Senate DFL revealed that the homeowner where Mitchell was apprehended is allegedly the widow of Mitchell’s late father.
The timing of Mitchell’s arrest is particularly significant as the Legislature is currently on recess for Passover and is scheduled to reconvene on Wednesday. As the details surrounding the case continue to unfold, many will be closely watching to see how this situation develops and how it may impact Mitchell’s political future. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
