The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a warning to healthcare providers regarding a concerning uptick in bacterial infections caused by a strain of meningococcal disease in the United States. Meningococcal disease, which is caused by the Neisseria meningitidis bacteria, can lead to severe symptoms including meningitis.
A variant of the Neisseria meningitidis serogroup Y has been responsible for 140 cases in 2024, with a significant number of infections occurring in adults between the ages of 30 to 60 years old, particularly Black and African Americans or individuals with HIV. The United States is known to have six different types of meningococcal serogroups, including types B, C, W, and Y.
Currently, the state of Virginia is grappling with a statewide outbreak of meningococcal disease type Y, with 35 confirmed cases and 6 fatalities reported since June 2022. It is crucial to be aware that meningococcal disease can result in two types of infections: meningococcal meningitis and meningococcal septicemia (meningococcemia).
Symptoms of meningitis may include fever, headache, stiff neck, nausea, vomiting, photophobia, and altered mental status, while symptoms of meningococcal bloodstream infection may present as cold hands and feet, diarrhea, fever and chills, fatigue, rapid breathing, severe aches and pains, vomiting, and a dark purple rash in advanced stages.
The CDC is stressing the importance of heightened vigilance among healthcare providers and the general public in order to prevent the spread of these dangerous bacterial infections. Stay informed, stay safe, and take necessary precautions to protect yourself and your loved ones from meningococcal disease.
