A recent trend in vehicle theft in Montreal, Canada has raised concerns about the use of Apple’s AirTags by criminals. According to reports, thieves are utilizing these small tracking devices to monitor and steal cars in the area.
The issue has prompted police in Burlington, Vermont to issue a warning to drivers who have recently visited Canada to be cautious of AirTags being placed on their vehicles. Two residents in Burlington found AirTags in their cars after returning from trips to Montreal, sparking fears of potential tracking and theft.
One of the residents, Ethan Yang, was able to locate an AirTag in his vehicle after receiving an alert that one was traveling with him. Cyber analyst Ryan McLiverty has also noticed a surge in criminal activity involving AirTags in Montreal, with criminals using them to track and steal cars. These stolen vehicles are often sold abroad or used for illegal activities such as smuggling drugs across the border.
To protect themselves from being tracked by an AirTag, travelers can take advantage of built-in safety features that send alerts when the device is not within a certain distance of the owner. Additionally, Android phones have the capability to detect unknown Bluetooth trackers, including AirTags. Apple has also released a Tracker Detect app that can scan for these devices.
As the use of AirTags for nefarious purposes continues to rise, it is essential for individuals to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to safeguard their vehicles and personal information. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story on ‘The Bib Theorists’ website.
