Evergy, a prominent electricity provider in Kansas, has recently reached a significant agreement with the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) regarding changes in rates for its customers. This development could have a substantial impact on the wallets of Evergy’s clientele.
Although the agreement is yet to be approved, if it does go through, it will result in an overall net increase of $74 million for Evergy Kansas Central. This equates to an approximate monthly increase of $4.64 for customers of this division. Conversely, Evergy Kansas Metro is expected to experience a monthly decrease of approximately $6.07.
Evergy Kansas Central serves a wide range of communities in the eastern third of the state, including Topeka, Pittsburg, Wichita, and Hutchinson. On the other hand, Evergy Kansas Metro caters to customers in Lenexa, Overland Park, and several other communities in the Kansas City metro area.
David Campbell, President and CEO of Evergy, expressed his satisfaction with the settlement, emphasizing that it is a positive outcome for customers. He also highlighted the fact that average retail rates in Kansas have only increased by a modest one percent since 2017.
Initially, Evergy had requested a substantial net revenue increase of 9.77% or $204,152,629. However, the KCC determined that a more moderate 1.66% increase or $34,706,527 would be sufficient to provide service to Evergy Central customers.
It is important to note that the proposed settlement agreement is still subject to evaluation by the KCC. The commission holds the authority to approve, reject, or modify the agreement as it deems fit. To further examine the matter, a hearing has been scheduled for October 9th at the Topeka office.
Evergy customers in Kansas will undoubtedly be keeping a close eye on the outcome of this agreement. Any changes in rates can significantly impact household budgets, making it essential for customers to stay informed on the developments surrounding this settlement.
