Title: United States and Allies Warn Houthi Rebels of Potential Consequences for Red Sea Attacks
The United States and its 12 allies have issued a final warning to Houthi rebels, demanding they immediately cease their attacks on vessels in the Red Sea. Failure to comply with this ultimatum could result in potential military action, according to a joint statement released by the countries.
The Houthi rebels have been conducting these aggressive actions in response to the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza since December 19. Their attacks on commercial shipping vessels passing through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait have raised concerns among the international community regarding the safety of global commerce.
In response to the escalating situation, the US has formed Operation Prosperity Guardian alongside its allies to safeguard ship traffic in the region. Currently, warships from the United States, France, and the United Kingdom are patrolling the area, providing a deterrent against further rebel attacks.
A senior Biden administration official made it clear that another warning should not be anticipated by the Houthis. This final notice carries significant weight, as it was not only signed by the United States but also Australia, Bahrain, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore, and the United Kingdom.
The US has also called on the United Nations Security Council to take action against the Houthi rebels. Additionally, they have warned Iran, the rebels’ primary financial backer, about the potential consequences of continuing to support them.
The need for a robust response stems from the recent attack on a cargo ship in the Red Sea. US helicopters retaliated against Houthi rebels, resulting in several casualties. President Joe Biden has been attempting to prevent the Israel-Hamas conflict from escalating further but has also emphasized the US and its allies’ readiness to defend against threats impacting global commerce.
However, the US aims to handle the situation in a smart manner that avoids the escalation of tensions with Iran and its proxy groups. According to a US deputy ambassador at the UN, the Houthi rebels heavily depend on Iranian support to effectively carry out these attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
These warnings and joint efforts highlight the urgency of the Houthi rebels’ actions and the need to safeguard international maritime trade. The international community, operating under Operation Prosperity Guardian, is resolved to protect vessels transiting through the Red Sea and ensure the security of this vital global trade route.
