Ukrainian President Calls for Global Peace Model, Meeting in Malta Gauges Support for Plan
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has called for a global model of peace as part of his 10-point formula to resolve the ongoing conflict with Russia. In a bid to gauge support for this peace plan, over 60 national security advisers from various countries convened in Malta for a high-level meeting.
However, Russia criticized Malta for hosting the talks, claiming that it was an attempt to isolate them further. Despite this, Zelenskiy remained resolute and expressed his desire for a day when human history would only be the history of peace. He also questioned the effectiveness of the United Nations Charter in achieving this goal.
Zelenskiy’s 10-point peace plan includes the restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, the withdrawal of Russian troops, protection of food and energy supplies, nuclear safety, and the release of all prisoners. The outcome of the meeting in Malta is hoped to be an agreement to hold a global peace summit later this year, aimed at bringing all parties to the table.
Malta’s Foreign Minister Ian Borg expressed support for the restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and condemned the injustices and abuse of power in the region. While the list of delegates to the talks remains undisclosed, it is known to include representatives from European, South American, Arab, African, and Asian countries. Notably absent were China, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates, who did not attend, unlike a previous meeting in Jeddah. On the other hand, Armenia, the Holy See, and Mexico were notable additions.
The timing of the meeting, amidst the escalating violence in the Middle East, highlighted the importance of finding a peaceful resolution to conflicts around the world. Both Ukraine and Malta issued a joint statement emphasizing their commitment to achieving just and lasting peace based on the principles outlined in the United Nations Charter.
While no fixed date has been set, preparatory steps for a potential peace summit in the future are in the works. The hope is that such a summit will bring together key stakeholders and pave the way for a peaceful resolution to the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. As the world waits for further developments, the realization of Zelenskiy’s vision for global peace remains on the horizon.
