Microsoft to Retire Windows Mail and Calendar Apps, Transition Users to Outlook
In a surprising move, Microsoft has announced that it will be retiring the Windows Mail and Calendar applications by the end of this year. This decision applies not only to Windows 10 users but also to those who have recently upgraded to Windows 11.
Windows Mail and Calendar are built-in applications that allow users to retrieve their emails and schedule events, tasks, and appointments. However, despite being bundled with Windows 11, these apps are not considered to be modern email solutions. As a result, Microsoft has made the decision to replace them with the new Outlook for Windows app.
To facilitate the transition, Microsoft plans to automatically migrate users to the new Outlook app in August. The company is also recommending that users start testing the new app by enabling a toggle in Windows Mail, which will allow them to install and import settings from the existing Mail application.
Initially, Microsoft had informed customers that Mail and Calendar would be replaced with Outlook in September 2024. However, after receiving significant backlash from users, the company decided to reevaluate the timing of the change. A new advisory from Microsoft now confirms that the retirement of Mail and Calendar and the transition to Outlook will take place in August 2023.
Fortunately, users will have the option to revert back to the current Mail and Calendar apps within Outlook. This ensures that they can continue using familiar interfaces while enjoying the additional features offered by the new Outlook app.
It is important to note that these changes only affect Windows Mail and Calendar users, and not regular Outlook desktop application users. Windows Mail and Calendar will no longer be supported or available for download at the end of the year.
Outlook for Windows will become the default mailbox application on new Windows 11 devices. The new app promises better integration with email providers, a personalized interface, and new calendar features that will enhance the overall user experience.
As the retirement of Windows Mail and Calendar draws near, it is imperative for users to embrace the transition and start familiarizing themselves with Outlook. Microsoft’s decision to streamline its email and calendar offerings underscores its commitment to providing users with modern, efficient, and feature-rich applications.
